Material

Built in TC4, Not Commercially Pure Titanium

Titanium for luggage comes in two grades. Commercially pure titanium, Grade 1 and Grade 2, is soft and easy to form but low in strength. TC4, also called Grade 5 or Ti-6Al-4V, carries roughly twice the tensile strength.

TT-001 is built in TC4 at 0.5 mm panel thickness.

TC4 will not draw at room temperature. The shell is therefore not pressed in one piece: panels are formed in segments and precision joined. A supplier offering a one piece drawn titanium shell is not working in TC4.

A mill test certificate is issued with every material batch.

Titanium Compared with Aluminum and Aluminum Magnesium

Titanium is the strongest and the most corrosion resistant of the three shells we tool. It is not the lightest.

4.6 vs 3.6

A 20 inch titanium case weighs more than a 20 inch aluminum case. TT-001 is 4.6 kg; TS-006 in aluminum is 3.6 kg. Titanium is denser than aluminum, 4.43 against 2.70 g/cm³, and the 0.5 mm panel only recovers part of that. Specify titanium for strength and corrosion resistance, not for weight.

Titanium Luggage FAQ

Material, tooling and ordering questions we are asked before a titanium program starts.

Which titanium do you use?

TC4, also called Grade 5 titanium or Ti-6Al-4V, at 0.5 mm panel thickness. A mill test certificate is issued with every material batch.

What is the difference between TC4 and commercially pure titanium?

Commercially pure titanium, Grade 1 and Grade 2, is soft and easy to form but low in strength. TC4 adds aluminum and vanadium and carries roughly twice the tensile strength, at the cost of being very difficult to form at room temperature. A TC4 shell cannot be drawn in one piece; it is formed in segments and precision joined.

Is titanium luggage lighter than aluminum luggage?

Not necessarily. At 20 inch, TT-001 in titanium is 4.6 kg and TS-006 in aluminum is 3.6 kg. Titanium is denser than aluminum. Its advantages are strength and corrosion resistance, not weight. If low weight is the priority, the aluminum magnesium platform is the better starting point.

Does titanium in a product name always mean the material?

Not always. In luggage the word titanium is used both as a material and as a colour name, so ranges described as titanium are sometimes aluminum shells in a titanium finish. Confirm the grade and ask for a mill test certificate rather than working from the product name.

What is the minimum order quantity?

300 pieces per model.

How long does sampling take?

7 to 15 days on existing tooling.

Can we sell it under our own brand?

Yes. Logo, interior and packaging are built to your specification and do not require new tooling on the shell.

Which surface finishes are available?

Brushed, bead blasted, anodized, electrophoretic coated, spray coated, PVD and etched. Logo work is done by laser engraving, UV printing or silk screen printing.

Which sizes are available?

20 and 24 inch, both tooled. Other sizes require new tooling.

Which trade terms do you support?

EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP.
